1. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus Railway Station

Previously known as Victoria Terminus, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Mumbai.

2. BMC Headquarters Building

The BMC was formed in 1865 and the foundation stone for its headquarters was laid by the then Viceroy, Lord Ripon on 9th December, 1884.

3. The Empire Royale Hotel

Located a stone’s throw away from Chhatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is the famous Empire Royale Hotel. Originally built in 1901, the stylishly designed Empire Royale Hotel offers 24-hour room service in its 55 well-appointed rooms.

4. Lawrence and Mayo

Lawrence & Mayo put eye-care (as we know it) on the map of India in 1877. The handsome neo-classical building was transformed from a dull grey structure into a robust and smart one in 2001.

5. J.N. Petit Institute

The pretty victorian-gothic petit library also went through a redesign in 2001. Its slender crete-plaster pillars were painted a brick-red instead of the earlier muted pink.

6. N.M. Wadia Building

The name ‘Wadia’ means ship builder. This is another amazing heritage structure, which houses many shops, restaurants, and offices, at CSMT.

7. LIC Building

LIC now owns 15-20 buildings in the Fort area. LIC has been taking up restoration work of these buildings in a phase-wise manner. This building is strategically placed between J.N. Petit Institute and Lawrence & Mayo.

8. Bank of India Building

A fire broke out on the top two storeys of this heritage building in April 2017 due to a short circuit. Fortunately, the fire department managed to contain the damage due to their quick response.

9. Ismail Building

After falling into complete disrepair over the years, the neo-classical Ismail Building has been refurbished by conservation architect Kirtida Unwala. This heritage four-storey building now houses Zara, the famous Spanish clothing and accessories brand. This makes it the largest retail space in a high street for a foreign brand in India.

10. Central Bank

Central Bank started its operations in this iconic and heritage building on Flora Fountain. It has been recently restored and the interiors redesigned and modernised. One can also find a museum of the bank’s history inside the premises.

11. Hotel Residency

In addition to its heritage look, the Residency Hotel is well-equipped with contemporary modern rooms with a flat screen T.V., mini fridges, tea/coffee maker, in-room safes, shower cubicles with rain showers, free wi-fi, and many such amenities.

12. David Sassoon Library and Reading Room

The David Sassoon Library was founded by Albert Sassoon and designed by architects J. Campbell and G. E. Gosling. It is located on Rampart Row, directly opposite the Kala Ghoda, and close to Elphinstone College, Army and Navy Buildings and Watson’s Hotel. It was completed in 1870 and built using yellow Malad stone.

13. Jehangir Art Gallery

The Jehangir Art Gallery was founded by Sir Cowasji Jehangir at the urging of K. K. Hebbar and Homi Bhabha in 1952.

14. Elphinstone College

Established in 1856, it is one of the oldest colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai. Some of its alumni include Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Bhim Rao Ambedkar, and Jamshedji Tata.

15. Kala Ghoda

The statue of Kala Ghoda is surrounded by heritage buildings like the Jehangir Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Modern Art, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya and The Arts Trust. The original statue of King Edward VII, mounted on a horse, was removed from the precinct in 1965; and it was then placed inside the Byculla Zoo. In 2017, a new statue, of a similar looking horse without a rider, was placed by the Kala Ghoda Association.
