A Morning With Butterflies – Photo Walk at Godrej Mangroves, Mumbai

I love butterflies! (Who doesn’t!) They look so beautiful with their large, colourful, and symmetrical wings. But I don’t get to see many of them around in the city. But I didn’t know that there are several green places in Mumbai, where I can meet my dear animal friends.

Recently, I went for a photo walk to Godrej Mangroves, Vikhroli in Mumbai. I saw so many butterflies, birds, and insects there. It was the first time I met so many butterflies at the same time in one place. Plus, I got the chance to photograph them with my Nikon Coolpix B500.

Watch my video about my experience of photographing butterflies

Here are some of the butterflies I met:

1. Striped Tiger Butterfly

It is one of the common butterflies of India. It resembles the monarch butterfly of the Americas.

Scientific Name: Danaus genutia

2. Plain Tiger Butterfly

Along with Asia, it is even found in Africa and a few parts of Australia. It belongs to the Danainae subfamily of the brush-footed butterfly family Nymphalidae.

Scientific Name: Danaus chrysippus

3. Peacock Pansy Butterfly

The rich orange-yellow upperside of the Peacock Pansy Butterfly looks super cute. It is a species of nymphalid butterfly found in South Asia.

Scientific Name: Junonia almana

4. Blue Tiger Butterfly

The head, antennae, and thorax of the Blue Tiger Butterfly is brownish black in colour, with white dots on its head and neck. This butterfly shows extensive migratory behaviour in southern India during the monsoons.

8. Grey Pansy Butterfly

I found many Grey Pansy Butterflies that day. They have a beautiful lavender brown colour with short, sinuous black bands.

Scientific Name: Junonia atlites

9. Common Crow Butterfly

The Common Crow Butterfly is a common butterfly found in South Asia and Australia. Its glossy-black colour with brown undersides and white markings give it a distinctive beauty.

Scientific Name: Euploea core

In addition to butterflies, I also got to meet numerous insects like Signature Spider, Carpenter Bee, Asiatic Bloodtail, Potter Wasp, and so on. I really love how each species of butterfly is different in colour, shape, and behaviour. Mother Nature has bestowed something special on each one of them!

Love this post, incredible photos but I especially love the graphics on your video! I’ll definitely be following on youtube. This post is a great reminder that group trips are the best way to really see things with an expert.

Love the fact that these green pockets are still thriving with biodiversity. I visited these mangroves when i was doing my post graduation almost a decade ago and it was so well maintained. I got to see many marsh birds and i had a really good time – hardly felt like i was in Mumbai.

I personally don’t really care much for butterflies or flowers but it’s nice to see someone who is passionate about them and it’s cool that you saw them out in the wild rather than in some greenhouse.

I’m very impressed by your photos! Butterflies move so quickly that I rarely manage to take a good shot of them. I think we saw Blue Tiger Butterflies in the north of Australia. There were many of them and it looked really like being in a fairy tale. And I can confirm we have many Crow Butterflies down here 🙂 Great work!

I’m impressed, I have to say. Actually hardly ever do I encounter a blog that’s each educative and entertaining, and let me inform you, you could have hit the nail on the head. Your idea is excellent; the problem is something that not enough persons are speaking intelligently about. I am very comfortable that I stumbled across this in my seek for something relating to this.
