BUTTERFLIES OF MUMBAI | Butterfly Species Guide (10 Beautiful Butterflies found in Mumbai)

Butterflies are so happy and colourful. So here I am showing you 10 beautiful butterflies, spreading warmth and happiness in the hustle and bustle of the city.

1. Common Rose

It is a common butterfly which is extensively distributed across India. During and after the monsoon it is extremely abundant, it is not an endangered species. It is tricky to photograph as it moves very fast.

2. Painted Lady

The Painted Lady is probably one of the widest spread butterfly in the world. It prefers meadows and open spaces and is most visible near the monsoon time. Its cryptic colouring can help it camouflage.

3. Common Grass Yellow

A very small butterfly, it is found in plenty all over India. This sun loving butterfly looks super bright and yellow on flowers. Females are slightly bigger and males are brighter in colour.

4. Red Pierrot

The Red Pierrot is a small but striking butterfly found in India. This small butterfly has a wingspan of 3 to 3.5 cm. It is found from the plains up to 8,000 feet, in fact, wherever its food plant, Kalanchoe, is abundant.

5. Common Albatross

This small butterfly can be found mostly after the monsoon. It can be easily mistaken for the Lemon Emigrant butterfly, but its milky white colour and spots can clearly distinguish it.

6. Dingy Lineblue

It is very small in size, smaller than Red Pierrot also. It can be difficult to identify because of its small size. It is brownish grey on the underside and it has two uncapped black spots.

7. Danaid Eggfly

They are found across Africa, Asia, and Australia. The male is black in colour and can be mistaken for the Great Eggfly. The female mimics the Plain Tiger Butterfly.

8. Common Jezebel

This bright and happy butterfly has so many colours. It is considered to be distasteful to birds. The black lines on its wings help it absorb the heat of the sunlight.

9. Gram Blue

This butterfly can be commonly found in open fields and scrub jungles. It feeds on flowers after they fall off. This is a low flying sun loving butterfly.

10. Brown King Crow

This butterfly can be seen all year round. It is very similar to the Common Crow Butterfly, but it has no white spot in the cell of the hindwing.

My favourite spot to spot butterflies in Mumbai is of course Maharashtra Nature Park. They have a well-maintained Butterfly Garden which has many host plants of butterflies. So you are bound to find many butterflies there, also look for many caterpillars and pupa in the host plants.
