15 Heritage Structures from Oval Maidan to Horniman Circle, Mumbai (CSMT Buildings)

Recently, I took a long walk from Oval Maidan to Horniman Circle in Fort, Mumbai, and I was amazed by the stunning heritage structures along the way. This area is a paradise for photographers! So today, I’m going to show you 15 must-see heritage landmarks that you shouldn’t miss. Let’s get started!

1. High Court

The Bombay High Court building is an example of the English Gothic Revival architectural style. The building features intricate carvings, including sculptures of wolves, foxes, monkeys, pigs, tigers, and birds.

2. Rajabai Tower

This 19th-century clock tower, inspired by London’s Big Ben, is one of Mumbai’s most recognizable landmarks. It is made of buff-colored Kurla stone and features stained glass windows. 

3. Standard Chartered

One of Mumbai’s grand financial buildings, retaining its heritage charm while serving a modern banking purpose housing premises of Standard Chartered.

4. D.G. Chamber

A classic example of British-era architecture, this building has been an important business hub for decades.

5. Bombay Stock Exchange

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) building is a 29-story structure with a unique design that incorporates ribbon windows, swinging wings, and a structural core. 

6. Jehangir Building

A heritage commercial structure known for its rich-brick façade and arched windows. It remains a prime location for offices and shops.

7. Amar Building

This elegant colonial-era structure, with its arched windows and intricate detailing, houses prominent financial institutions including the RBI.

8. Botawala Building

This heritage structure is known for its classic European architecture and is home to various commercial establishments.

9. Bob Building

This heritage structure, now occupied by the Bank of Baroda, features imposing columns and a classic British-era design.

10. Elphinstone Building

A classic stone façade structure with arched windows, this continues to be a landmark.

11. Red House

A striking red-brick heritage building that adds a pop of color to Fort’s architectural landscape.

12. Sanchar Lekha Bhawan

A historical telecommunications building that played a crucial role in India’s communication network.

13. Maneckji Sett Agiary

The architecture of the building is a mix of Persian and Greek Revival styles, with two lamassus standing guard at the temple entrance. As in all Zoroastrian temples, non-Parsis are not allowed to enter.

14. State Bank Buildings

A series of stunning heritage buildings that house one of India’s oldest banks, The State Bank of India.

15. Bomanjee Hormarjee Wadia Clock Tower

This historic clock tower was built in 1882 as a token of appreciation for Bomanjee Hormarjee Wadi, a Parsi philanthropist who had contributed to the cause of education in the city.
