15 Heritage Structures at Kala Ghoda in Fort, Mumbai (CSMT Heritage Buildings)

Recently, I took a photo walk at Kala Ghoda in Fort, Mumbai, and I was amazed by the stunning heritage structures along the way. This area is a paradise for photographers! So today, I’m going to show you 15 must-see heritage landmarks that you shouldn’t miss. Let’s get started.

1. Army & Navy Building

Built in the 19th century, this grand structure served as a departmental store in colonial India. It houses the various offices of the Tata group of companies and other businesses on the upper floors with the ground floor dedicated solely to the Tata Group’s lifestyle department store ‘Westside.’

2. CSMVS

Formerly the Prince of Wales Museum, this Indo-Saracenic masterpiece houses rare artifacts and artworks. It is one of Mumbai’s most treasured cultural institutions.

3. Kala Ghoda Statue

The statue, titled ‘Spirit of Kala Ghoda’ was designed by architect Alfaz Miller and sculpted by Shreehari Bhosle.

4. Elphinstone College

Elphinstone College represents the Neo-Gothic architectural style. Established in 1856, it is one of the oldest colleges in Mumbai.

5. David Sassoon Library

The David Sassoon Library and Reading Room is a famous library and heritage structure in Mumbai, India. The idea for a library to be situated in the center of the city came from Albert Sassoon, son of the famous Baghdadi Jewish philanthropist, David Sassoon.

6. Rhythm House

Founded in the early 1940s by Suleman Nensey, the shop introduced Bombay’s elite to 78 rpm records, providing an exclusive space for Western music imports.

7. Jehangir Art Gallery

It was founded by Sir Cowasji Jehangir in 1952. The building is designed by Durga Bajpai, and has the distinction of being one of the earliest structures built in the city.

8. Dr Homi Bhabha State University

The building of the college with its Gothic architecture has been classified as a Grade I Heritage structure.

9. National Gallery of Modern Art

National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai was opened to the public in 1996. It hosts various exhibitions and art collections of famous artists, sculptors and different civilizations.

10. Oriental Mansion Building

The Oriental Building in Mumbai, India is a famous heritage building with Gothic architecture and intricate detailing. It was designed by Frederick William Stevens and built in 1885.

11. St Andrews’ Cathedral

St. Andrew’s Church in Mumbai, India has a Portuguese-style facade and Gothic Revival architecture. The facade is adorned with elegant carvings and detailed masonry.

12. Charging Bull and Common Man Sculpture

Inspired by Wall Street’s Charging Bull, this sculpture represents India’s financial resilience. RK Laxman’s ‘Common Man’ sculpture nearby adds a touch of satire.

13. Tata Consumer Products

A colonial-era structure that now serves as the corporate office of Tata Consumer Products.

14. Kashmir Government Arts Emporium

A heritage store that showcases exquisite Kashmiri art, handicrafts, and carpets. The building retains its colonial charm.

15. Jeroo Building

The Fab India outlet in the 150-year-old colonial Jeroo building in Kala Ghoda in Mumbai was originally a horse-carriage stable.
