Aspects of Ganpati Photography

Ganesh Chaturthi offers a number of opportunities for photography. Here are the various aspects of Ganesh photography that you can explore.

You can use any kind of gear for Ganpati Photography. In areas that are too crowded, I go with my mobile phone only. Having a DSLR will give you an advantage but it is not a necessity.

1. Ganesh Workshops

These are the places where the Ganesh idols are being made in huge numbers with such a lot of effort and hard work. They are located all over the city. You can go anywhere to find and photograph them. The biggest and most famous Ganesh workshop, according to me, is Parel Ganesh Workshop where most of the popular Ganesh idols can be found.

2. Aagman Sohala

A very photogenic scene erupts when the Ganesh idol is being transported from the workshop to its mandal. You can capture this scene from the streets or try getting a bird’s eye view of the same for a different perspective.

3. Ganesh Mandals

The Ganesh idols look very beautiful in their mandals, placed in huge sets with such a lot of decoration, lighting, and symmetry. You can go to the popular Ganesh mandals like Lalbaugcha Raja, Mumbai cha Raja, G.S.B. Seva Mandal, etc. or any local ones. I prefer going to a local Ganpati mandal as it attracts less crowd and I get ample time to photograph the idol.

4. Visarjan

After 10 days, it’s time to say goodbye to Ganpati Bappa. So let’s try capturing Him for the final time with our lens. In Mumbai, you can go to Girgaon Chowpatty, Gorai Jetty, Powai Lake, Juhu Beach, Versova Beach, or any reservoir in the city, to witness Ganpati Visarjan in Mumbai. These Visarjan areas may be crowded, so please take care of your gear and belongings.

Ganesh Chaturthi offers great opportunities for street, portrait, and product photography too. I really love photographing different idols at various workshops, mandals, and during Visarjan. Each and every aspect of the festival is special.
